King Hussein bin Talal

(1935-1999) King of Jordan from 1952-1999. He expelled the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) from Jordan in 1970 in a civil war known as Black September. He was also a major player in various Middle Eastern peace initiatives, including the drafting of United Nations Resolution 242 following the 1967 War and the Madrid Conference in 1991. In 1994, King Hussein signed a peace treaty with Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, effectively normalizing diplomatic and economic relations between Jordan and Israel.
