1940- ) A Jewish Israeli political and media figure. He served as a member of the Israeli parliament from 1974-2006, including the positions of Minister of Education and Minister of the Environment. From 1996-2003, he led the Meretz party, which supports the withdrawal of Jewish Israeli settlements from the West Bank. Due to Meretz’s decline in power, he retired from politics in 2006. Sarid now writes a weekly column for the Israeli newspaper Haaretz.
