Meimad

Key:
Meimad

(a Hebrew acronym for “Jewish state, democratic state”) An Israeli political party. Founded in 1988 by Rabbi Yehuda Amital as an Israeli movement aiming to transform the face of religious Zionism in Israel, with a special focus on challenging religious and political extremism. The Meimad movement formed a political party by the same name in 1999, supporting the idea of Israel as both a Jewish and democratic state.  Meimad joined a Labor party coalition from 1999-2009, but never ran independently in Israeli parliamentary elections. Meimad broke from Labor in 2009 and joined the Green Movement party; however, Meimad-Green Movement didn’t receive enough votes to gain a seat in parliament. See Arian, Asher and Michal Shamir, eds.
