(1894-1940) A Jewish Zionist of Russian origin who immigrated to Palestine in 1906. Hoz helped found the Jewish Legion of the British army during World War I. A leader of the Labor Zionist movement, he later became a major player in the first 20 years of the Jewish paramilitary group Haganah (the precursor to the Israeli army). He also served as head of the state department of the Histadrut, a labor union for Jews in Palestine. A pioneer of aviation in Israel, the Sde Dov Airport in Tel-Aviv is named after him.
