(1860-1904) A Hungarian-born Jew and the founding father of Zionism. Herzl outlined his ideas in the famous pamphlet “The Jewish State,” stating that the only solution to the Jewish problem and anti-semitism in Europe would be the establishment of a Jewish State. He organized the First Zionist Congress in 1897 in Basel, Switzerland and served as its president until his death.
