(1942-2008) A Palestinian writer and political figure. Most well-known for his poetry, Darwish is considered the Palestinian national poet. He was also active in the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) and a journalist and editor for many years. Darwish broke with the PLO in 1993 in protest of the Oslo Process, which he deemed as detrimental to Palestinian rights and statehood.
