al-Dura, Mohammad
(1988-2000) A twelve-year-old Palestinian boy who was shot dead, allegedly by the Israeli army in Gaza at the beginning of the Second Intifada in September 2000. The boy was killed next to his father during an exchange of fire between Palestinian militants and the Israeli army at Netzarim junction in Gaza, an event captured on camera and publicized extensively. Within Palestinian society, Muhammad al-Dura was quickly deemed a martyr and symbol for all Palestinian children who have been killed by Israeli forces.
