Website development

Project Goal

a highly collaborative partnership that will result in launching a new Just Vision website by December 2009. The Drupal CMS will support your activities to inform local and international audiences about under-documented Palestinian and Israeli joint civilian efforts to resolve the conflict non-violently.

Our objective is to provide Just Vision with a web site that will both serve your present communications and community building needs and provide a flexible platform that can support future features and goals.

LONG TERM CORE REQUIREMENTS

CMS
•    The interface can be only in English, unless there is a really inexpensive way to have an interface in Arabic and Hebrew.  Most importantly, the content must work independently in all three languages so that input in one language does not affect the others.  We do not want to lose any functionality from what we currently have.
•    We need a staging site, which we do not currently have.
Data Migration
•    This is key because we have so much data online that it would take hours to manually import.
Overall
•    We’d like optimal capacity for the facebook “share” feature, so when a visitor wants to “share” a page of the site on facebook we’d like relevant details and images to be automatically pulled into the facebook share module.
Security
•    A maximum concern for us, as we were hacked in the past.  We need to make sure that we can do regular updates to keep on top of this.

Hompage—all three languages
•    Rotating portraits in Flash with 1-2 sentence quotes which appear when the photos are moused over.  At least four portraits should appear at once. We strive for balance in terms of Israelis and Palestinians and gender, so the rotation cannot be entirely random (or if it is, they need to rotate often enough to show a balance).  If they rotate only with a new page load, we want to ensure that no load presents an imbalanced presentation. We need this in all three languages.  Each portrait is also a link.  [We are open to another dynamic way of introducing the range of peace builders we profile]
•    Flexible space used to highlight featured films, success stories, campaigns we are focusing on, or for specific users. We would want the flex space to have its own mininavigation, perhaps the images dim until moused over.  Possible the rotating portraits exhibit could be merged into this design. JV would change the content of the different sections (maybe five sections in each language?), perhaps on a monthly basis, and to set one area as the default (different in each language). The flexible space would include text, graphics, and the option to include and play video from the homepage. For example, we might start with the default being "5th Year Anniversary", which would show our own milestones and be a fundraising pitch.  The other spaces could be: "Featured Film", "New Releases", "Facilitation Best Practices", and have information about recent workshops we've held and have a link to the facilitation materials we offer; then "Education" would advertise the launch of our new Classroom Section with a graphic and explanation-- later we might change this to advertise educational workshops we're holding, or a call for educators to submit lesson.  In each language, the content would be different, and we’d want to be able to set control the default setting in all three languages independently.  We’d need each section to include links (perhaps multiple links).
Note: one idea we are thinking of is to carry this flexible space into all the sections of the site.
•    facebook & twitter icons on homepage
•    Navigation.  A simple structure where we have access to changing terminology in all three languages.
•    Possible: a basic login to capture names, email addresses, locations so people can record answer to a question JV poses, and post appropriate responses.  We’d like to price this out in all three languages in order to decide.  It is not necessary for the site launch.
About JV—all three languages
•    Secondary navigation:  What we do, FAQ (bullet pointed list with anchor links to text below), Success Stories, personnel (or possibly: Staff, Board, Advisors), contact info.  We want maximum flexibility here, ability to add photos and captions.
Learning Center
•    In all three languages:  A main page possibly structured like the dynamic flexible space on the homepage, with photos, text, featured lesson spot, secondary navigation to modular lessons, timeline, glossary, portrait search, thematic highlights search, videos, Map (if we have it).  This content would vary and needs to be independent in all three languages, so if we had a flex space with four or five boxes, we’d use each space differently in all three languages.
•    Ability to add pages for each lesson, PDF downloads, embedded video, links
•    Map, not necessary for site launch.  To pinpoint our interviewees and glossary locations. Want to price it, both doing just in English, and doing all three.
•    Glossary. Presented according to what type of terms they are (is this what is meant by taxonomy?).  should be searchable, prioritizing the titles of the entries.  For the launch this is only necessary in English, but we want the capacity to present in Arabic and Hebrew down the line.  Important on the backend: most (but not all) interview footnotes are glossary definitions. When we update a glossary entry, we want it to automatically update in each relevant footnote. On the CMS side, we need two kinds of footnote entries, one tied to glossary entries, and one independent.  In Arabic and Hebrew, for the launch, we need the capacity only for independent footnotes, not the kind tied to glossary terms.  In the future, we may want the glossary term kind as well.
•    Flash Timeline redesign.  This is not top priority for a site launch, but we want to price it.  We want the capacity to publish in Arabic and Hebrew, but would begin with English.  We want to price creating a CMS for this, but would be open to continuing to update using an excel spreadsheet.  We want the timeline views to be customizable for an individual year, an individual interviewee, and to be able to see all Israeli or all Palestinian entries.  There are design requirements also mentioned in the PPT.
Voices from the Field—All three languages
•    We would like to explore using a similar layout to the homepage flexible space.
•    This page introduces the filter for peacebuilder portraits (www.justvision.org/en/profile) as well as the thematic highlight search more prominently.   Includes two featured portraits and a featured theme.
Peacebuilder Portrait pages—All three languages
•    This is pretty much as is (www.justvision.org/en/profile/orly_noy), with additional links to more media, online resources, tell-a-friend function and links to social networking sites (English only for the later two).
Interview and Excerpts—all three languages
•    Pretty much as is:  www.justvision.org/en/profile/orly_noy/interview
•    A button for “printer-friendly” that would allow researchers/journalists etc to print the interviews out if they want to
Thematic Excerpts Search—all three languages
•    A filter for the thematic excerpts:  We want ability to break themes down into different types, and ability to edit the types.  For example Peacebuidling and Nonviolence Work might be one type with a list of themes under it: Lessons Learned, Community Responses to Peace Work, Obstacles and Challenges, etc.  We might have three types of themes.

Just Vision Films—all three languages
•    Perhaps same layout as homepage dynamic space
•    Ordering DVDs.  At present we are not doing an online store, but may want the capacity for this in the future.
•    Press kit download, link to press section
•    Link to archive of all video materials (imbedded), inclusive of short films.
•    Spot for a featured film and then index of other films
•    Each film has its own separate page, with the ability to add pages as we need. each short film is imbedded, has multiple links around it, downloadable PDF press kits, text, tell-a-friend. Links to each facebook presence for each film (in addition to link to “share” or post the film’s page or trailer to a visitor’s personal facebook profile.

What You Can Do—all three languages
•    Perhaps the flexible space layout here with blocks for different kinds of activities/different users, with nice graphics/photos.  Main space for every user: what you can do broken down into separate boxes.  “If you have 5 minutes…” “If you have 3 hours…” “If you have a week”, Invite a peacebuilder, traveling to the region?.  Each of those boxes would lead you to a different page with a list of what you can do and providing necessary downloadable pdfs.  We’d need the ability to add pages and change the content of these sections.  Content in all three languages is independent.
•    Host an Event, Invite a Speaker—all three languages. FAQ with screening terms (content varies in all three languages).   We would like an online form for these requests, though not necessary for site launch.  Possibility of having people send us narratives and photos about past events so we can post—not necessary for the site launch. [is there an automated way we can do this so that we get the right formats but it goes to our email and not to the site?]
•    IP organizations List (see bottom of www.justvision.org/en/what_you_can_do).  About 100 organizations currently, would be great to be able to filter according to different fields of work.
•    List of organizations using JV materials.  Can be just a list, like www.justvision.org/en/what_you_can_do

Calendar
•    like EP.com (http://www.encounterpoint.com/screenings/index.php), but searchable by region: International, US, Israel, Palestine. North American events cab be only in English.  Arabic and Hebrew events translated into English.

International events in English. We want to price doing this in all three languages. If it is too expensive, there may be other online calendars we can simply link to for Arabic and Hebrew.
•    Past events. Should automatically go on archive so people can see where we’ve been.  Ability to link to photos and narratives about  past events.

Press Section—all three languages
•    Perhaps use the dynamic space for this section as well.
•    PDF downloads, stills, releases, FAQ, JV Press Kit, download, ability to priority links to articles and interviews with JV staff, list of awards (so they don’t just appear in chronological order), How to contact JV for interviews
•    Text with links, photos, possibly imbedded video to make a story pitch
•    Contact information

Support Just Vision
•    Donations made via Groundspring. Ability to edit text.
•    In future we may add a store, selling DVDs and soundtrack, other items.  Not for launch.

Sign up for Email list
•    We want a tell a friend option here.  For now, we are only going to be doing a sign up in English.
